This is K2 in Canada, and you are listening to Nirvana the Fed of the Show, the podcast, the podcast, all about Nirvana the Fed of the show with Kitty Michelle and Steve.
KitHello and welcome to Nirvana The Band, the Show, the Podcast. The podcast all about watching and talking about Nirvana, the band, the show. My name is Kit, and I'm joined by my two lovely co-hosts. I'm Michelle.
SPEAKER_06His name is John Cena.
KitOh my god, John Cena is here.
MichelleNo, not just me. I'm seeing him. John Cena's always here. He's kind of like the Holy Spirit in a way. Well, when you couldn't see John Cena, that's when he was carrying you.
KitAnyway, we're here to talk all about Vice Land season one, episode eight, The Bank. Very exciting. We have made our way through Vice Land season one. But before we get to any of that, let's do a little housekeeping. First things first, Michelle.
MichelleHave you seen Hoppers? Uh, yeah. I've seen Hoppers. I loved it. It was so fun. The whole thing. Yeah, the whole thing. Um I thought it was a really good movie. You remember a couple weeks ago when we were talking about um like our favorite dumb action movies, like Action USA and Rad. It reminded me a lot of those, I think. But I mean, I guess that's not that surprising because it had the same director as Rad. It's Hal Needham.
SteveYeah. Rad also had a shark that looks exactly like Vanessa Bayer.
MichelleYeah. And it was like Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, and just like what's not to love about this movie. I do think it was a little confusing that Disney did this theatrical re-release because it's not like an anniversary year. It's of it's 48 years old. It's almost 50, but it's not 50 yet. Um, but I guess they bought like a lot of random IP over the years. So maybe they were just really excited about um having Hooper in their collection. And they really wanted to put it in theaters. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SteveIt was really good to see Burnt Reynolds and Sally Field get back together after Smokey and the Bandit.
MichelleMm-hmm.
SteveThey're great, very erotic pairings.
MichelleVery erotic pairing.
KitEspecially for a Disney movie.
MichelleYeah. Um, so anyway, you can stop having Meba doing the homework. I have seen beloved 1978 action film Hooper about uh an aging stunt man. Um it kind of just made me want to watch Rad again, or maybe the Rad documentary that just came out. Um, but I did it. I've done my homework.
KitWow, that's that's huge. Thank you so much, Michelle. You know, there there was a period of time here when we just didn't think it was gonna happen, but pleasantly surprised. Thanks.
SteveSee the the one problem with you only seeing Hooper and not Smokey is that Hooper's really considered a bit of a step down from the pairing of Smokey and the Bandit. Both creatively, sexual energy, box office.
MichelleYeah. But had so many good car crashes and explosions, and like a beautiful, slightly haunting meditation on middle age. And I just wasn't expecting that based on the way you guys talked about this movie.
SteveYou know, Gene Siskel once said that that movie is just thrills, spills, and Reynolds's Leer.
MichelleAnd what? And Reynolds? Reynolds's Leer? Yeah, like Oh, Bert like Burt Reynolds King Leer.
SteveI I would think you would know what I was talking about since you're such a big fan of the film Hooper, Michelle.
MichelleWell, I I it's not that I didn't understand it, it's that um uh I just I didn't I didn't know what the words that you just said were. But now now that I have the other words, I understand. I mean, of course. We love Hooper.
KitIs this big going well? It's great, it's great. It's fantastic.
MichelleUm I'm sorry, I didn't I didn't watch Hoppers. And um, to be totally honest, which I think you can tell, um, I also didn't watch Hooper, but I did watch some clips of it on YouTube.
SteveYeah, because I was gonna say, what a good pull, because you're you're hanging out in Burt Reynolds Land with me. I'm gonna be ready to call that plug.
MichelleI know. I I thought you might clock it immediately. Um, I did spend a lot of my commute earlier today uh trying to figure out the funniest option for a movie that sounded like Hoppers that wasn't Hoppers. Um I thought about Looper, which I actually have seen and enjoy, but it felt it wasn't it wasn't close enough in Word. I thought about making it. Uh there's a short film that for some reason is on Letterboxd called Whoppers. What is that? Directed by uh, I don't know, I couldn't find it. I wanted to watch it. That was my that was my number one choice, but it was just listed as Andrew No Last Name. Um, and I and I could not locate the actual film.
SteveWhat? It was like it was like the no last name of wits, and then they just chopped it off.
KitUm all right, let's get out of here. Um whiteboard, let's take a look at our plans. Um, first things first, let's take a look at our list of dream guests. Have we heard from the Canada arm? The Canada arm.
MichelleNo, but I could try again. Okay. Are you gonna make up a different child relative this time?
KitA cousin, maybe?
SteveNephew, cousin Steve at makeawish.net.
KitHave we heard from uh Werner Herzog? No, sadly, no. No. What about anybody else from the Zapruder crew? So Luca, Jared, Kurt, Bobby, Andy, anybody?
SteveI heard from Jared Young, a Canadian first baseman of the New York Mets.
KitWow. All right. What did you hear from him? This might be our record time of bringing up the Mets.
SteveThat's all. Anyway, I just heard from him. Incredible.
KitUm, have we heard from Matt and Jay?
MichelleNot yet. And maybe entirely for lack of trying.
KitNot even not even a cease and desist.
SteveNo, I don't think we're getting that. I think that would require them to pay for their lawyers to do it.
MichelleI feel like they would pay for their lawyers to make a stop. Do you get served when you get a cease and desist, or is that just like a letter in the mail situation? Or does someone have to like trick you into saying who you are for that?
SteveWell, given the famous cease and desist, my we talked about long ago, my college paper from Siskel and Ebert's production company. It was just a letter we got saying don't use two thumbs up in an article.
MichelleIf you could just like send them, maybe we should be sending our own cease and desists. Ooh, yeah, let's send out the cease and desist that you would like to see in the world.
KitYeah, let's send a cease and desist to Werner Herzog.
SteveCease not coming on the pod? Mm-hmm. You know, Werner, I got some words for you. Love your work. Think you're great. You're the one holdout on the dreams guest list. Carson showed up. True. Connor Ratliff has been in the house. Any Canadian in.
MichelleSeveral Canadians, even. It's true.
SteveSo what's up, Werner Herzog?
MichelleI did maybe I I maybe shot a little shot a little high.
SteveDon't minimize our wonderful, fabulous, famous guests who have already come on. He's he's just a he's a real busy guy.
KitNot really. He's just going through his closet and post Instagram reels of all his little trophies. Doesn't seem that busy. That's right.
SteveWe got time to be on Parks and Rec. You got time to be on Nirvana the Fan The Show of the Podcast.
KitThat was like over 10 years ago. And what has he done since? Boom. Mandalorian trying to eat a baby. Did he try and eat the baby on that? I feel like he wanted to eat that baby.
MichelleThat's why he wanted to see him closer so he can see what he tasted like.
SteveIt was like a lobster in a tank.
MichelleGo on that one.
SPEAKER_01I would like to eat the baby.
MichelleWill you do your Werner Herzog impression for Werner when he comes on this show? Sure. And he's gonna go, it sounds nothing like me. You're doing a very good j I can't. Mine's worse.
SPEAKER_01Your your impression of me is like an impression of a nightmare on a dream. Ooh.
KitI think we have him in the room with us right now. I think you're channeling him.
SPEAKER_01It is I Werner Hersog.
MichelleWe got him.
SPEAKER_01Any other questions?
MichelleCan you show us that cute little soccer trophy? Here you go. Oh, it's beautiful.
KitSo charming. Klaus Kinski. Anyway, bye. Very busy man. Could only give us a few moments of his time, but wow, were they worth it? Floated away.
SteveIt's weird. He had jet boots.
MichelleThat's not weird. That feels very reasonable. I think if anyone was gonna have jet boots. Actually, there are other people who are more likely. Like you on these maybe top ten.
SteveUh Matt Johnson. He might have jet boots.
KitI don't feel like he would have jet boots.
SteveHe could be like a little anime boy.
KitHow would that be very anime boy?
SteveThere's no anime boys with jet boots. You gotta come on. Not a single one in any of your animes, not a single one of them more jet boots.
KitIt's so funny that you think I'm like the soothsayer of anime when I've only seen like maybe four.
SteveThat's three more than me.
KitI'm sure someone somewhere. I mean, I think Astro Boy has jet boots. Does he have jet boots or jet hands?
SteveI don't know.
KitAstroboy was also a video game, I think.
SteveOkay. So were a lot of things.
KitOh my god.
SteveAnyway, this is my favorite episode of Nirvana the Ban the show. He does have little jet boots.
MichelleThat's what I think look like. He's a little Astro Boy. I'm really excited to talk about this episode. Should we just should we jump into it?
SteveYeah. Yes. I am so hyped.
KitOkay, chill.
SteveJohn Cena. What?
KitI think we should go back to talking about the jet boots, though. I think that was really interesting and we could waste at least 20 more minutes talking about that.
SteveLet's do it. I got all night, baby.
KitSo in uh season one, episode eight, the bank. In this episode, when Matt and Jay find themselves involved in the hostage situation of a bank robbery, Matt thinks he sees a way to get the band booked at the Rivoli. So, folks, what did we think of this one?
SteveBest episode 10 out of 10. Perfect episode.
KitAll right, and that's been our show. Thank you for listening, everybody. Nothing like a good feeling.
SteveHot take, Matt did nothing wrong.
KitWhoa. Whoa. Nothing nothing wrong. Deeply out of character for you, Steve, to say such a thing about Matt Johnson.
SteveI first time I watched it this week, I was like, ooh, it's gonna be hard to defend Matt. And by the time I was three watches in, I was like, Matt was right. You didn't do anything wrong here.
KitHmm. Maybe we should be watching the show less, perhaps.
SteveHe saved a bunch of people's lives. Uh-huh.
KitMm-hmm. Okay, second point.
SteveHe showed us his cute little buttons. Mm-hmm. Pressed ham on glass. It was the best, it was the best plan that they've had yet. Most successful.
KitUm okay, okay. Interesting. Interesting.
SteveDebatable. He used a 3D printer. I don't know how to do that.
KitI think you just sort of put the thing you want printed in it, does it?
SteveSure. That one feels neutral. That one doesn't feel like a good thing he did. All I'm gonna say is some of those people might have died in that bank if not for Matt Johnson.
MichelleSome people did die in that bank because of Matt Johnson.
SteveSome of the hostages might have died because of Matt Johnson. Without Matt Johnson. Let me phrase that. That was a phrase. Nope. Some of those hostages might not have made it if not for the valiant efforts of Matt Johnson and his bravery.
KitYeah, a really selfless act that he did in that bank.
MichelleI think we'll discuss this throughout throughout the episode. I I love that man. I'm not sure, I'm not sure I can follow you down this particular argument path. Innocent. Wow.
KitUm, all right, well then let's go through it. Um the episode opens. Uh Matt and Jay are at the library, and they've decided that the only way to properly negotiate with Rivoli to get a show is to 3D print a gun. And that's why they're at the library to 3D print a gun.
MichelleI feel like I was really lost. Maybe I just like need it spelled out for me on a whiteboard. I felt very lost about what the plan was for this episode because it was like print a gun, get money from the bank, question mark, question mark, question mark, play the rivelly.
SteveWell, when you are in a negotiation, the last step is the gun. It's true. You too. Clearly is not told us.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SteveAnd the best way to negotiate with the librarian is to get the money out of the bank, pay the library fines, and then go negotiate with the Rivoli. Clean, simple plan. Perfect. Mm-hmm. I love this library. It is beautiful.
MichelleIt seems like a very nice library. I think we have to add that to our Toronto tour.
SteveTotally. Also, I love this librarian.
MichelleThe first librarian or the second librarian?
SteveBut I uh especially the first one who was like, look, you can't print any weapons or anything sexual. Which implies that people are trying to print dildos left and right at the library.
MichelleOh, absolutely. I have no doubt. And I'm sure that people are trying to print like daggers in there too.
SteveOh yeah.
MichelleMaybe other people actually trying to print a gun. Um, I think I the stuff in the library was very funny. It did sort of like start to stretch my um I was I was really stressed out for the library staff. Cause because I know that like I'm watching this, I know that those two guys are jokesters joking around. But I also know that those librarians have both dealt with people who genuinely did want to print a dildo or a knife, and someone who did want to negotiate their $85 of overdue fees. And that's just like a whole nother that's just another day for them.
SteveThis is another rare one that my wife watched with me. And the second librarian with the late fees sounds exactly like the librarian at our local library, and it was incredibly disorient.
KitOh, really? Oh.
SteveLike, looks similar, sounds exactly the same. That's wild. Do you think it's her? Um, no, this lady was a little more friendly. So a twin, perhaps? I support our libraries. This woman's a little surly.
KitWe're gonna burn it to the ground.
SteveI'm there twice a week. But this plotting. Plotting the best trying to 3D print a gun. They have Monopoly Spider-Man 3 edition. I could go pick that up and play it.
KitIs that rare?
SteveI probably. But yeah, you go in, it's like, hey, would you like to play Monopoly? We only have Sam Raby's Spider-Man 3 edition.
KitHave you have you played it yet? No. I need to know what the like little thimble and car are. Like, are they Spider-Man?
MichelleYeah. What is jail in Spider-Man 3 Monopoly?
SteveMaybe you pick up pictures of Spider-Man and you trade those.
MichelleGet me pictures of Spider-Man. Um but I think you need to go investigate and report back on Spider-Man 3opoly.
SteveNext time I go in. Anyway, I I love the editing on this. There's a great shot where Matt's like, nope, nope, we don't have a gun. We don't have a gun. And but before he says that, the camera pulls back really quickly so that they're enough of a distance so that Matt could say whatever and they ADR it in later. It's such a nice little touch. Nope, nope, nope.
KitI think my favorite little bit of this is when Jay goes over to return the videotapes that as he's listing them out, these are all videotapes of things that we've already done this season. So home alone, Jurassic Park. Like it's just a fun little moment. That's really nice.
MichelleI think my favorite moment in the library is when they're using the 3D printer, and the person next to them is like, oh, that looks really interesting. And I'm so curious what they were actually printing on the printer, since clearly the gun was not allowed.
SteveA dildo. They are printing a dildo, but they said that it was a rocket ship, like a high schooler would do.
KitMm-hmm.
SteveYou didn't know high schoolers that did that? They drew dicks and then claimed it was a rocket ship.
KitNo, we just kind of owned up to the fact that it was a dick.
MichelleI went to an all-girls school, so you didn't know what a dick was. You didn't know about that. They didn't teach us. You're not allowed to know at all girls' Catholic school.
SteveDo you know what our all-boys Catholic school taught us? How to draw a penis? Well, they they called it the insert school name here rocket because they drew dicks everywhere. And we're like, it's a rocket ship. But uh we had a a brother, you know, not a priest or a deacon, but a brother, which is kind of like a guy nun. A monk? He wasn't a monk, but he literally they called it it's Catholics. We don't have monks. We do.
MichelleYes, we do.
SteveBut not those monks. We monks. We uh culturally, culturally Catholics. Exactly. Um, and he he taught us sex ed in the Catholic school, and the first thing he gets up and goes, and he sounded like Scooby-Doo.
KitIncredible. I love this.
SteveI I loved him and he loved me because I didn't like I was not scared of him like everybody else was, and he thought I was great, but he was like, All right, everybody. I know everyone worries about having a large penis, but don't worry if it's too big, it'll hurt your wife.
KitWhat does everybody worry about that? I mean, I worry about my dick being too big all the time.
SteveThat makes sense. This is how he opened the first sex ed class. All right, everybody. Fascinating. I love I love that guy. Brother Ed, what a legend. Wow, shout out to Brother Ed. Just like, all right, he was writing his notes for class and was like, all right, I got these guys here. They're all worrying about big old dicks. I gotta get that out of the way. And first on the list. And let them know to not worry because it might hurt their wives.
MichelleThat's very um conscientious of Brother Ed.
SteveHashtag feminism?
MichelleMaybe.
KitPossibly. Did he follow up with what to do if you have a small penis? You know, you gotta do both sides here. Mm-hmm. Make sure everyone's included.
SteveTrue. I felt bad when there was someone like really packing heat, and they're like, Oh, I'm gonna hurt my wife.
MichelleWell, don't worry. It's fine.
SteveHe didn't have it, then it was like a normal sex ed class, you know, but minus no contraception or anything like that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SteveBut just like he came in real hot, real fast.
MichelleBecause I think I don't know if he was right about people asking about dick size or not, but that does feel like maybe a teaching approach shaped by previous experience. I'm just like, I'm just gonna get this out of the way. Yep. Number one.
SteveBig dicks, hurt wives. Put that on future.
KitAnd that's the name of the episode.
SteveAnyway, they were 3D printing a dildo, and this is just one of those like um perfect editing bits, right? Like the the jumping between the footage of a gun 3D printing and then their faces. Like it's it this is the one of those magic trick episodes, especially the sequence.
MichelleThe the slash puppy to create continuity.
SteveYep.
MichelleIt's really nice.
SteveIt's really pretty genius. Um I love Matt just coming out so confident that he's a great negotiator and he's gonna hold the library tapes hostage.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
MichelleHow long have I had those that he was $85 a day? Well, it's a dollar a day, but how many tapes does he have in there? It's quite a few.
KitOh, true. I mean, he showed about like what, four or five?
MichelleI assume it's a dollar a day a tape.
SteveHmm. Probably. Um, I wonder if continuity-wise, like it's like eight weeks, one per episode. When Matt and Jay come on the show, we're gonna ask them how long were those tapes out for?
MichelleAlso, do you still have them? What is your library find built?
SteveAlso, incredible that in uh 2017 the Toronto Public Library was still renting out VHS tapes.
MichelleMm-hmm. That's really nice. Physical media forever. I wonder if they still do.
SteveWe'll find out when we do our trip.
MichelleI keep waiting, like cassette tapes have made a return in music, and I feel like CDs have made a big return recently, and I keep waiting for someone to be like a sicko about only watching music on VHS.
KitA terrible medium, but you mean you don't have a VHS guy?
MichelleI did I did go to a physical media like swap recently that was like bring your own stuff that you want to get rid of, take some other stuff. Um I left with a copy of um Thumb Tanic, which is a version of Titanic where everything's acted out by thumbs. Um but that's on DVD, that's not on VHS. You can also watch all of it on YouTube for free. Have you watched it yet? No. You should. I I want to watch it on our DVD, but I I acquired this before we have acquired uh a means to play it. Um you could do a double feature. You could watch Kung Pao and Enter the Fist. Enter the fist and then thumb tannic. Which one goes first? The thumb or the fist? Great question. I think, yeah, fist and then into thumbs up. Which is what Steve is doing right now, and I think that's correct. Unless the thumb enters the fist.
SteveYeah, like maybe that's what they were 3D printing. Um a fist. Nothing sexual. Wow. Okay. So King Shame, why don't you?
KitYeah, they um end up deciding that they're going to negotiate, but in order to negotiate, Jay needs to get the money. So he He keeps the VHS tapes and they decide to go to the bank to go get the $85. Mm-hmm. And now the episode begins.
SteveSo you know how I'm normally like the like deep emotional analysis, thinking about friendship and love on the show?
MichelleYeah. Mm-hmm. I'm familiar.
SteveThis is the episode that hits the other part of my brain that you two know that I don't talk about a lot of this episode, which is dark, violent sicko love of that shit.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveWhich hasn't really come up on this on this show. And this is real this this is a real sicko shit episode. There's a fair amount of death.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SteveI I was thinking before, like, the way that you know we tend to talk about this show is like our listeners will probably be surprised to hear that the most violent one is my favorite.
MichelleI don't know. I feel like I feel like maybe this side of you has been hinted at, if not explicitly discussed. Okay. Never mind then. I think I think your your dichotomy is very present. And I feel like I watched this episode, I was like, oh yeah, of course this is Steve's favorite. Knowing the things I know about you. Um, and I'm excited to hear all of the things you love about it.
SteveI know like this is like supposed to be Dog Day Afternoon, despite having nothing to do with Dog Day Afternoon except for bank robbery and the opening.
KitUm and also Jay McCarroll was in Dog Day Afternoon. No, he's just very hot.
SteveIt's true.
KitYeah.
SteveAnd you know what? I'd watch it. You know, like when um Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter did Waiting for Godot? They could do a new version of Dog Day Afternoon to make up for the bad Broadway one with Nirvana the band.
KitThere was a probably version of Dog Day Afternoon?
SteveYeah, it was John Barenthal and what's his name? Ebben Moss.
MichelleOh, Richie?
SteveYeah.
MichelleEbon Moss Backrack?
SteveYeah. It was the two of them, and then everybody hated it.
MichelleI'm not plugged in enough to theater. Do you think Canadian banks are more friendly and let you go into their basements to use the bathroom? I've never I've never used a bathroom in a bank, and I would never have guessed that that was an option available to me. Yeah, I mean surprised too. Uh maybe that's just um American culture speaking.
SteveI was also very surprised.
MichelleLike I assume the basement is where they keep all the money and civilians aren't allowed down there.
SteveI like that idea that they're just like stairs to all the money.
MichelleYeah, and it's downstairs.
SteveJay had nothing but an icy and then has to piss. So and I I what I love what I love about this is Matt cannot even let him pee in peace. Well, of course not.
MichelleNo. Do you think they always go to the bathroom together? A hundred percent. I do think that's it's an important distinction of um a level of friendship where um a best friend is someone that you can talk to while you're peeing, but you can't talk to all your friends while you're peeing, or you don't want to.
KitWhat is everybody's stance on that? I genuinely don't enjoy it when I am talking to somebody in the bathroom and the conversation continues while we are peeing. I feel like we should stop and then continue when we leave the stall.
MichelleI only want to continue the conversation if it is like truly one of my best and closest friends. And then it and then it feels totally fine. But I feel like I once the stall door closes, we pretend that neither one of us knows the other one is in here. Yeah.
SteveI cannot pee if there's someone next to me at a urinal, or sometimes even if someone's in the bathroom when I'm there.
KitOh wow. Needs to be a best friend.
SteveMy spouse, my best friend. I can't do it. I'm like, mm-mm. Never have been able to.
MichelleInteresting.
SteveI I like to be left alone in most places. And this is just one of those moments where I like to be left alone.
MichelleUm, I think that's fair. I think that's reasonable. Like 95% of people, I would rather we not talk while we're peeing.
KitYeah. But Matt and Jay aren't like that. Matt is having a full-on conversation with Jay, getting stuff out of his backpack while Jay is peeing. Um and that's where we get the hit him with the John Cena.
SteveAnd my favorite, it's I know it's like a minute later, but my favorite Jay line of the whole episode. He says, um, like, not every plan needs to have a John Cena part. And Matt goes, it's a John Cena element. It's so funny.
MichelleWell, he says it so sadly. Yeah. It's so, it's very sweet. It's it's a John Cena element.
unknownI know.
SteveIt's also very funny watching this now, knowing just how famous and everywhere John Cena is. That part of this is the plot of this is no one knows who John Cena is.
KitWell, no, the Rivoli won't know. I love the implication that the Rivoli not knowing is because they're just like so cultured, not another level, where they wouldn't dare to know something like John Cena from wrestling, you know.
MichelleIt did make me curious a little bit about sort of the timeline of when John Cena went from like famous wrestler who has done some cameos in movies to like just regular famous person. I feel like it was like starting to happen around the time that this was filmed.
SteveI mean, Blockers was 2018. And I feel like that was the one that he started getting like non-wrestling fan cred.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveThat movie rocks. Throw that on the letterbox list. Me, the person who controls the letterbox list.
MichelleYeah, you. I don't remember anything about it. I remember liking it, but I remember no details. Maybe it's time for a rewatch.
SteveSo sweet. Kid, have you ever seen Blockers? Nope. Really quick, Blockers Corner. Blockers Block. One of the reasons that I really recommend that movie to folks is it a movie where the basically the plot is parents are trying to stop their daughters from having sex on prom night. But the entire thesis of the film is that the parents are wrong to do that. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And that's not something that we really like see. And that's why I really love that. So, John Cena, let's talk about it. Um I'm looking here. He was in 2014, he was on Scooby-Doo WrestleMania Mystery. Huge hit.
MichelleAnother Scooby-Doo program that I'm unfamiliar with. That this is this podcast is the first time I'm ever hearing of it.
SteveSo Train Wreck, he was in Train Wreck. I have not seen it. But like, yeah, it looks like the one two punch of Blockers and Bumblebee, two bangers from 2018, was a year after this. So yeah. Then we're looking at Pure Cena celebrity.
MichelleYeah. I also I love that interaction between Matt and Jay in part because I I don't think we've ever heard them talk about John Cena or any wrestling at all until then. So it's one of these like great moments where we get a hint of what's happening outside of the TV show. And I like to imagine that in between the buffet and this, Matt's gotten really into wrestling and he spent all week talking about John Cena.
SteveHey, oh my god, do you guys remember that Fred guy, that YouTuber, Fred? Oh. Unfortunately, yes. Yeah, why? That's John Cena's son. John Cena played the dad in four Fred movies. There was four. There are four Freds.
MichelleI knew there was one. I didn't Four seems excessive. And he was in four of them?
SteveYeah, he's Fred's dad.
MichelleHe's in all four of them?
SteveHmm.
KitWell, it was important for him to play that role because it really influenced his take when he took on the role as Peacemaker. So yeah.
SteveFred, Fred Two, Night Colon, Knight of the Living Fred, and Fred 3, Camp Fred.
MichelleMm-hmm. What's Fred for?
SteveUm Fred movies.
MichellePart of the Fred Cinematic Universe.
SteveHold on. Oh, sorry, it was Fred the Show. I mislicked it. It was Fred the movie, Fred 2, Night of the Living Fred, Fred colon the show, Fred 3. Fred the show, the movie? Yeah. Fred Fred Show the movie. Anyway. It's enough of Fred. Mm-hmm. But yes. I've always viewed Matt as the kind of guy that's really into wrestling, but has nobody to talk to about it.
MichelleMm-hmm. You think John Cena's his favorite wrestler? Or just one that he's excited about in that moment?
SteveBecause the thing is, John Cena's wrestling persona is basically what Matt Johnson character wants to be. Just like all bravado. Everybody thinks he's the coolest dude in the world. Big shorts. Big shorts that don't go below the knee, just like Matt's beloved sweatpants. Just like that's what John Cena's whole thing was like, I'm the fucking best man. And he was a rapper for a little while.
KitJust like Matt Johnson.
SteveYeah. I'm just saying, like, I see the line of logic of why character Matt would be obsessed with John Cena.
KitThe I think the shorts and rolled up pants, holy jeans, is like the most damning evidence now that I think about it. Like that is.
SteveBut also I can picture this headcanon, I guess. Character, Matt Johnson character, like standing in front of the TV trying to learn John Cena moves in order to look cool while doing Nirvana the Band stuff.
KitYeah. Yeah. So Matt's gonna hit them with a John Cena. Jay's not into that sort of thing, hasn't put the gun back into his backpack, they're leaving the bathroom, and what did they see? A bank robbery in progress.
SteveAnd there's also a lot of Jared here. We see Jared's hands a few times.
KitYeah, he's trying to stop Matt from intervening with the gun.
SteveAnd Matt, with just so much confidence, is like, no, no, no, I got this. And his name is John Cena. Obscene amount of gunfire. Bullets hit the wall in front of Jay and Jared.
KitLike Jay just completely cowering at the bottom of the stairs is like so harrowing to see.
SteveThat's the thing. It's like legitimately intense for like 10 seconds.
MichelleOh yeah.
SteveJay does almost die.
MichelleI think I assumed the first time I watched this that like they were gonna come upstairs to Matt being like not dead, but seriously injured, and like that was gonna be the rest of the episode. Like it genuinely I was I I was scared for him. I was nervous for the sweet boy.
SteveThey don't pull back on the violence on this one, which is one of the reasons I love it so much.
MichelleYeah. Like I felt like I kept waiting for um like somewhat it to be like, oh, that's not blood, that's Jay's slushie that's just down to the syrup. And they never did that. And remarkable restraint for how many references are made to the red slushie that he's been carrying around for like two hours. But yeah, it's gen it's genuinely violent.
SteveThere's so many moments of Matt like doing little mat bits, and there's just splatters of blood on the wall behind him. And every time I see that, I giggle like uncontrollably. Yeah. I hate to say this. I'm gonna defend Jay on this one.
KitYou hate to say it.
SteveI'm the Matt defender. Someone's gotta else gotta be the Jay defender. I can't be the both defender. What? Jay is right to cower. Obviously. Also also right to not want to pick up corpses.
MichelleYes. I think one of the things that is very funny about this particular episode is that like Jay is making a lot of very reasonable points, but Matt is just like so on one and goading him into doing stuff, and Jay's like, well, I'm I'm not afraid to pick up a dead body. And and like he's just he's really convincing him.
KitI think this is the most like web series Jay Jay has ever been in the Vice Land series because he's just very much just like, no, I don't want to do this. No, Matt, you're being stupid and this is dangerous and this sucks. Like, very resistant, like the entire time. In a way, we haven't seen him in the entire season one so far. But to be fair, this is a crazy ass situation that they are currently in.
SteveAnd Matt calls out his motivation in one line. He's like, Oh no, no, we're dead. We're we're dead. So I feel like Matt's like, we're fucked. I might as well have some fun with this, go for broke.
KitMm-hmm.
SteveOne last hurrah.
KitMaybe we can get a show at the Rivoli out of this.
SteveExactly. Shoot for the moon, man. I follow your dreams. I want to know what the budget for this episode was. Because the cops show up and it is a surprising amount of extras.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SteveAnd like full lots of gear and cars and And then we find out that Matt's never negotiated before.
KitHe says one of my favorite lines in this where he's just like, I just wanted to look tough in a library setting.
MichelleYep. Matt confessing that he doesn't know how to get negotiate has three of my favorite moments. Three of my favorite lines in this whole episode, which is one, I just wanted to look tough in a library setting. Two, Jay going, Oh Matthew. And three, Matt saying he gets bad deals all the time, and then sadly saying, I once paid eight bucks for a Jamaican beef patty. Which I don't know why, just it it is so funny to me. And I loved it, and and it's and it's the best.
SteveThat and then paired right before that with Matt being like, ha, I touched the gun, that was the stupidest fucking thing we could do. Like it's just so many great laugh lines in a row. It's a machine gun, if you will. Uh with the jokes. Yeah. And then Jay has a great idea. One of the VHS tapes they have is a negotiator.
KitHe makes it an incredible face pulling that tape out.
SteveI know, it's adorable. And guys, friend of the show.
KitEnemy. Samuel L. Jackson.
SteveWell, you never did see me return that VHS.
KitOh. Cut their mic.
SteveLet me be the bank.
KitNo. Kevin Spacey's back, everybody. Everyone's favorite recurring character.
MichelleI'd never seen the negotiators, so it was genuinely a jump scare to me when Kevin Spacey showed up on my screen. Get that guy out of here.
SteveDo you know what's funny, but also disturbing?
MichelleWhat?
SteveThat I also think that Kevin Spacey is here again. No, but that I'm sure when that happened, Michelle's thought was fuck you, Steve, or something along those lines. Because everyone has tied me to Kevin Spacey.
MichelleI I did see it. I was like, oh no, we're gonna he's there's gonna be a you never really did see me go.
KitWell, the good thing about this is I don't have to make a new meme for the carousel. I can just keep reusing the same somehow Kevin Spacey has returned. I think this is his last appearance. Thank God you said that, but I don't know. I'm really scared.
SteveYou never did see him die. Do you think Ty West is gonna do a vanity project to bring him back too? Like he's doing for Johnny Dip.
KitOh god. Uh no, because I'm going to hit Ty West with my car.
SteveIn Minecraft.
KitIn real life. Ty West, if you're hearing this, I'm coming after you with my car.
SteveUh anyway, negotiator. I remember liking it when I was in like high school or whatever. But Matt says it's a very fuckable film.
MichelleI don't know what that means. I would love to interrogate that sentence, because what on earth does that mean? Is it is it a very erotic movie from your memory?
SteveNo, it's a harrowing drama. Oh no, does Matt have a thing for Kevin Spacey? Maybe for Samuel L.
MichelleJackson.
SteveI mean, who doesn't?
MichelleYeah. It's true.
SteveWhat's in your wallet?
MichelleOh, right. He's a He's a credit card guy.
SteveI I like that they're watching it on the security camera tape, so that it's framed around like camera five.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveOh, while they're watching the negotiator.
MichelleI really like that before they pop it in, he just like shouts to all the hostages in the room, like, do any of you work here? Do you know if there's a VS player?
SteveSo should we talk about Chris the negotiator? Let's talk about Chris the Negotiator. Yeah. Played by Bert Harkness.
MichelleEveryone's favorite.
SteveMichelle, would you mind reading us his great bio?
MichelleUh, sure. So Steve looked into um actor Bert Harkness um and shared with us this his his what even is this? His audition for application to be on a show called The Fashion Hero. Um there are a bunch of pictures of him. He looks great. It's very buff for a 75-year-old man. Buff for any age man.
KitTo be clear, there is a photo on this website of him in a leather vest, and he has biceps for days, my friends.
SteveYeah. Matt Johnson, eat your heart out. Big beefy arms.
MichelleUm, who am I? I am a retired Canadian Forces chaplain and was the suicide prevention officer in Edmonton for a short time. I ride a motorcycle with the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Group and serve as a chaplain for the Gulf Kuwait Unit. I have a BTH, which I haven't looked up, but I am assuming is a bachelor's in theater, an MA and D Min degrees, as well as a metallurgy certificate from McMaster University. I worked at Dofasco Steel in Hamilton for 19 years before joining the Canadian Forces. I've appeared in several movies and commercials. I am also a published author and retired columnist. I was a civilian pastor in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for five years after my release from the CF. I'm also certified as a mental health first aider. Obsessed with this man.
KitWhat a storied life and career.
SteveBut the thing that really got to me is This picture of him riding a motorcycle. Oh yeah, that. But also, like in real life, he was a suicide prevention officer, which means he probably had to talk down some people.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveHe was a professional at this.
MichelleHe does seem he's very convincing in the role of Chris, the hostage negotiator, who has 20 minutes to get them John Cena.
SteveMm-hmm. He was also security guard at one point, so he knows all about robbers.
MichelleHe has so much relevant experience for this role. That's why they hired him. Come on the show. I love the interactions between Matt and Jay and Chris the hostage negotiator. Because I just love that Matt picks up the phone and and is is like he's working at the bank, like a teller. Hello, this is the bank.
KitAnd then asking, you know, what does this look like to you, honestly? Before deciding to really dig his heels in and be like, you know what? We're the robbers now. I mean, it's nice. It's you gotta check if there's an exit ramp to go off on.
MichelleAnd then when it's like, no, we think we think you're the robbers and the hostage takers, and then just say, okay. So we are.
SteveDid nothing wrong. He starts by saying, I don't know. He starts by saying, Is there any chance you would believe this is a misunderstanding? He tries to end it here. Just saying.
SPEAKER_06Hmm.
SteveDoes he try very hard?
KitTries more than Jay. Oh my god. See, here it is again. Free Jay McCarroll.
SteveI do think it's really funny and very cute that Jay's like, just tell him, man, just tell him. And Matt is being kind of reasonable and is like, I'm gonna test the waters a little bit.
MichelleHe's being very reasonable. Yeah.
KitWhat's reasonable about this?
SteveHe asks them, hey, would you believe that this isn't this isn't uh a hostage situation on our part?
KitYeah, but Jay's still saying in the background, please just tell them the truth.
SteveJay's very cute in this moment, I will say that. He is. His vibe is on this whole episode is awesome, come on, Matt.
MichelleMm-hmm. It's very sweet to me.
SteveAnd then uh they decide that they're gonna pick up a dead body, and Jay does not want to do this. I mean, respectfully, same.
KitThat does not seem like a good time.
SteveNo, not at all.
MichelleYeah, I also don't want to touch dead legs.
SteveIt is incredibly funny that like Jay goes, it's dead legs. It is dead legs. It's true. Yeah, and like you were saying, Michelle, Matt just like basically negs him into doing it.
MichelleHe negs it with like the power of like embarrassing him in front of a crowd, even though the crowd can't see them and is not responding to anything that they're doing. And I'm assuming these hostages think that these are more people who are potentially gonna kill them.
SteveAnd it is very disturbing that every so often like there's a bang or they do something and like the hostages like jump and like get upset.
MichelleYeah. Well, then also that Matt's plan for like picking up this body is to take it to the roof and make a pronouncement from up there is just so wild to me. Yeah. It would be so hard to carry a dead body to the roof, especially if you don't want to touch it in the first place. Mm-hmm.
SteveI laugh so hard when he's like, This blood is on your hands after he throws the body off the roof. You made me do it, Chris. Okay, that's the one thing Matt does wrong. Blames the poor Hawkson negotiator.
MichelleThat isn't the thing that's wrong.
SteveThe throwing the body off the roof. Doesn't but he makes the other guy feel bad about it.
MichelleI would say maybe those are both not good things.
SteveIt what I I love so much about this episode, uh-huh. Besides everything, uh-huh, is that to everyone else, every background character, except for that one guy who's just like smoking a cigarette, being chill, that they cut to, the best. Everyone in this is acting as if they are in a harrowing thriller. They're all in a Michael Mann movie.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveAnd Matt and Jay are goofballs.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
MichelleWell, I think my understanding from sort of behind the scenes stuff that I looked up before we started recording was that the crowd that gathered was all like. Genuine, just like passers by interested in what was going on, and uh you know, not sure how much, but maybe believing that there was an actual crime of some sort going on that like the police were actors and the hostages were. But like when they show those shots of like people on the street looking and gasping and being horrified, like that's all some amount of genuine.
SteveThat I think really adds to it. But you know, you have there's no bits with the hostages, you know what I mean? There's no like, oh yeah, oh, this poor lady here, let's let her out. It's just it's so pitch black. And if you take out the jokes and the fact that we love these guys, this is a really unsettling heist.
MichelleYeah.
SteveAnd that delights me to no end, and I think heightens how funny it is to see them just doing silly little goofs while there are people like cowering on the floor and there's blood all over the walls.
MichelleWell, can you imagine what it would be like to be one of the hostages experiencing this? Horrible. A horrible, like a bunch of gunshots, and then like you hear two people come up and start just like having a fight. They go watch, you know, 45 minutes of a movie and then come back out, and you're just sitting there the whole time. And then and then you hear gunshots, and then and then you're freed eventually. But what has gone on?
SteveAnd all the while Matt's on the roof saying that they need the wrestler John Cena, he needs to be in the great in a great move and practicing moves on the cops like it's an outdoor match. I would watch that movie, John Cena just pummeling a bunch of police. Hell yeah.
MichelleMm-hmm. Yeah, that sounds great.
SteveThey say asked to talk to a hostage, and Matt picks up a dead body of one of the robbers and is holding it up and having Jay do the voice while Matt puppets the head from behind. And then they get in Matt and Jay get in an argument.
KitYeah.
SteveOver they're both named David, both of these characters. Yeah. And Jay wants food, and Matt wants a plane that will pick up the building and fly it to safety.
SPEAKER_06Uh-huh.
SteveAnd then like Jay gets so mad, is like his partner's doubting him, come in now, they're hit, they're like in a weak spot. And then Matt just shoots a corpse in the head.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveIt's the funniest part of the entire episode to me because it is so horrifying. Mm-hmm. Yeah. How how'd you feel about Matt pushing it that far?
KitI mean, I didn't think that Jay's request for food was that horrible. He had only he had only had a slushie.
SteveJay was totally right to ask for 20 pizzas.
MichelleYeah. And he's thinking about the other hostages. I think that's very generous of him. Agreed. Um, I do think my favorite part of that particular interaction is is Jay saying David again and then saying, Can we go back?
SteveI I'm curious, for the two of you who are not as demented as me, do you what was your reaction the first time it goes there? Because for me, when he shot the corpse, I gasped and giggled uncontrollably the first time I saw it.
KitI mean, I think this episode is such a thrill ride that I was just in the car and they were taking me up and down and all around. Um, I don't remember exactly what my reaction was to that, but yeah, I I didn't have as much of a visceral reaction as you did.
MichelleI think it w throwing the first body off the roof was the first was my moment where I was like, oh, this is a different good type of one than usual. Um and so the shooting the corpse felt like an escalation of that, but felt like on the same on the same roller coaster.
SteveThis is one I would love to ask them about if we do get them. Just like what made them want to do something this dark, especially given, you know, how much they've sanded the edges off in the Vice Land versus the web series. Because I think this is the darkest they have gone, period. Yeah.
MichelleYeah, that feels right. I mean, other like in Viceland for sure. I think the Matt hangs himself in the web series is darker than this. Yeah. I think that's delightful. What a goof.
KitSo, okay, backing up a little bit.
SteveYeah.
KitI I know we're talking about the bank, but Matt Johnson did just get married. Um, do we think he hung himself at the reception like he said he wanted to do on the commentary for that episode? At it to the list to ask.
SteveOh, we have to ask, because the man made a promise. Yeah, not to be parasocial, but I need to know. No, that's not parasocial, it's good journalism. Oh, thank you.
MichelleYou made a goof 18 years ago. Did you follow through at your wedding? Um, I think he did it. I'm choosing to believe.
SteveYou want to believe? Xviles, director's gut, now on Hulu?
MichelleYeah.
SteveI'm Fox Molder. Ooh. Can I be Scully? Sure. Kit's kind of a lone gunman vibe. There's all three of them. Thank you. Oh my god. I figured you'd like that. Thanks. Um, I love that what gets Matt to center himself is he goes, come on, Jay, have some fun. And Jay goes, have some class. And Matt's like, yeah, you're right.
KitI get that's the most web series interaction we've had.
SteveYeah. And then, you know, this is also partially when Matt's like doing bits with blood everywhere, and I'm just hooting and hollering. And then the thrilling conclusion, they go on the roof, and the ha and Chris agrees to let Nirvana the band play the Rivoli. Do you think he meant it? No.
MichelleDo you think he called the Rivoli, or do you think he's lying to them?
SteveI think he's a liar. Filthy liar.
MichelleI want to believe.
KitI feel like he's a good dude. I've seen his biceps. Those biceps could get anyone to show at the Rivoli. So true.
SteveI just feel like they would have called if he did.
KitThey would have called if he did. Oh.
SteveTo just a minor out of the band and just be like, hey, just checking in on you guys, just letting you know you're not gonna play here because of those hostage takers.
KitWell, I think maybe Chris didn't end up calling right then because they believed all three of the robbers were dead. Yeah, the people who were in the show were for nobody.
MichelleTrue.
KitDid we ever explain why we are escalating the demands? Because all of it was to get the show at the Rivoli.
SteveI think he's just biding time and then realizes that, hey, I can use this. I don't think Matt realizes to ask until he's asking. He's just in the moment.
MichelleWell, I feel like there was a moment earlier where he was like, you ask you make all these crazy demands, and then when you make the thing you actually want, it'll seem totally reasonable. And so, of course, a show at a at a small concert venue is a much more reasonable request than a plane that will fly the whole bank away.
KitYou mean a venue of middling repute? A la our friend Barry.
StevePut that on a t-shirt. Anyway, like I that's what my read was. Like Matt just kind of manic and going for it. And then when he realizes that it's kind of working, he tries to find a real angle. But at first, he's kind of just in like I have a death wish mode. Yeah. I also love how quickly Matt's like, great, great, we have a deal. I'm gonna release the hostages after he's like fine, Nirvana Band will play a show with the Rivoli. And then Jay says he can't take it. He doesn't want to go down, he wants to live, he doesn't want to die. He kills Matt. Shoots him in a little book.
MichelleAnd then the show is over.
KitThe first time I saw this, I was shocked. Like before the reveal, obviously. I was just like, but there's a season two. How the fuck is this gonna work? You know?
MichelleYeah.
KitUm, but no, crazy.
MichelleAnd it's very convincing, and like the the music that's playing while Jay's saying he doesn't want to die is so good. And it's like it's a heartbreaking scene of him seeming to kill Matt and then go downstairs and pretend to be a hostage.
KitAnd pick up Matt's hat and touch it so lovingly. Yeah. Oh my god.
MichelleHe looks so haunted.
SteveHe's a great actor.
MichelleHe's a great actor.
SteveOr hear me out. Different timelines. Maybe there is a universe where you kill Matt. And that's the end of them.
MichelleAre you saying there could be a Nirvana to ban the show multiverse?
SteveThey've already confirmed the multiverse. Oh, I guess so. Just saying. That'd be a great one.
KitI really do hope that I know that they said that they are gonna be reusing the movie that they scrapped as well as the bits of season three that they produced. I really hope that when they get to the part where it's after the movie that it is a primer episode. Mm-hmm. I really want a primer time travel episode very badly. That would be fun.
SteveDo you think they would also make a phone number where you could call and they would explain it to you?
KitI hope so. I hope they also have uh the plan on the whiteboard is just that infamous diagram of explaining what happened in the movie.
SteveCan we also throw a Donnie Darko one in there for me?
KitYeah.
SteveHell yeah. Just there's there I see two branching paths in front of us. One where Matt's full of shit about like the post-credit scene sets up a new villain or whatever.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SteveAnd one where they just go all in on multiversal stuff and it either goes great or backfires.
KitI'm I'm hoping we don't get like an actual multiverse. I'm so multiversed out. Yeah.
SteveThat's the craziest thing to me. That we've hit this point where multiverse is boring and also normie speak.
KitYeah. It's it there's just too much of it. Yeah, what if it was one timeline and things had consequences? Hear me out.
SteveI know that's crazy, but you don't need to see Patrick Stewart as Professor X die for a fifth time on screen. Pass. Guys, we're not all going to see Avengers Doomsday in Infinity Vision opening day.
MichelleWhat is that? Yeah. Is that like fake IMAX? I think I think this has been explained to me like six times, and every single time I hear it and then I erase it from my mind.
SteveInfinity Vision 101. Dune 3 got all of the IMAX screens.
KitAs it rightfully should.
Steve100% agree. The Russo brothers shouldn't be allowed on anything but the smallest screen possible. Um you gotta watch it on your phone.
KitJust watch it on an iPod.
SteveAn iPod shuffle. So Disney was like, okay. Um Infinity Vision. It's just theaters that we think are nice enough to show Avengers Doomsday.
KitIs that really the criteria? There's nothing about like the size of the screen or the hour.
MichelleOr like different projection. It's not like the laser at AMC.
KitIt's just like vibes-based. Like, uh, this one's nice.
SteveIt's a quality certification.
KitHuh?
SteveIt's them being like, yeah, this theater is good enough. Infinity Vision.
KitLike the popcorn is good? Like, what do you what do you mean? Like the bathrooms are clean enough.
SteveOkay. Here's the stats. It needs to be at least 45 feet. It needs to have Dolby sound system. Okay. But these are all what most theaters have. Okay. And brightness levels of either uh 14-foot Lamberts for 2D or 6 in 3D. Excuse me. Again. Um like this is just what a normal half-decent theater has. Interesting. I'm going to see Mutiny in Infinity Vision.
MichelleWell tomorrow. I will I will give them that Infinity Vision sounds sick. The cool name. Yeah.
SteveIt's also very funny.
KitYeah, when you said Avengers Doomsday, Infinity Vision, and I said, What's that? I didn't mean Infinity Vision, although this was fun. What is Avengers Doomsday?
SteveI don't think the Russo brothers know yet what Avengers Doomsday is.
KitI've yet to fully watch any of the trailers. Um, I've just been seeing screenshots of things I don't understand online, and I'm okay with that, honestly.
MichelleHave watched several of the trailers, and I feel like I have the same level of understanding as you do. Oh, really? Just screenshots out of context. The trailers are kind of like a slideshow of different screenshots.
SteveWell, because they clearly don't know what it is yet. This movie is not done being edited. There is that interview with Alan Cumming where he was like, Yeah, I was in a green screen room talking to nobody, not knowing who the other character was, because they clearly just recorded a bunch of people saying things and are gonna fucking plug and play them around. That's crazy.
MichelleIs this Alan Cummings' debut in Marvel or has it been in Scrawler?
SteveFrom X-Men 2.
MichelleHuh?
KitMultiverse, baby. I don't give a shit.
SteveIt's I okay. I'm fascinated by the MCU, like just as a product. Like everything about how they fuck it up and everything being so stupid. I will not watch any of them. Any of them? Last one I watched was Deadpool Molverine, and I like almost cut my eyeballs out.
KitThat was part of the MCU, wasn't it?
SteveYeah, they thought it would be fun to make a movie that was just one last ride for a series of films that no one liked. Which which one? The Fantastic Four ones that everybody's pretending they loved, the later X-Men movies, Electra. I see.
MichelleI see. I did enjoy Electra when it came out, but I was in like seventh grade, I think. I I have enjoyed other things that have come out since then, but there's just there's just too much of it, and there's too much homework and expectation that you've seen every single one of them. Um and I don't like being told what to do. So it's true. I will not watch the 15 movies and two seasons of television that you have to watch to understand Avengers Doomsday. I've seen some of them already. I will not re-watch anything. And when I eventually watch Avengers Doomsday on a plane somewhere in like a year and a half, I will be confused.
KitFor our listeners who don't know, uh, Disney released uh a list of things that you should watch before seeing Avengers Doomsday. And it's long. It's long and it's a mix of television shows and movies. And I I don't know, guys. I don't think I'm gonna go see that.
SteveYou know my bar because of AMCA list is really low. But like I won't even go see that Spider-Man movie because it's two and a half hours. What's this gonna be? Three hours and 45 minutes of just, hey, remember that guy? Oops, he's dead now. Probably. Spider-Man was fine.
MichelleI enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun. It's just so long. It is it is a solid half hour or more longer than it needs to be. I think that's correct.
KitYeah, I'm probably not gonna see it until it's gonna hit streaming because we all know my issues with these Spider-Man movies.
SteveNo, it's not Toby. Topher Grace.
KitNo Topher Grace. Huge problem.
SteveNo, Elizabeth Banks is the hottest Betty Brand has ever been.
KitListen, I have been out here defending the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy for years, decades at this point. Yes, even three.
SteveUm, and you know I'm in those trenches with you.
KitI know, and I appreciate that. I think that is what brought our friendship even stronger because for a long time you would say, I love the Sam Raimi Spider-Mans, and people would be like, huh? What do you mean? They're bad. No, you saw three, it discolored your your feelings on these because one and two are perfect.
SteveUm Spider-Man 3 is good.
KitAnd Spider-Man 3 is good, but you kind of have to like lead a horse to water on that one. Yeah. Um, but yeah, I have issues with all of the other Spider-Man. I love him.
SteveHe's so cute. I love him. He feels so good. Look, I love Tom Holland in the Odyssey at that one lip sync battle.
KitOh, yeah, the umbrella.
SteveHe did a good job at Umbrella, yeah. I think that Fred of Sarah movie is gonna be good.
KitMaybe that was happening, but okay.
SteveDirected by Paul King. I don't know who that is. Ooh, Paddington and Wonka.
KitOh, okay. I'm back in. I'm so back in.
SteveI was like, Kit, you are a Paul King stan and you just don't know it.
KitI don't know. Yeah.
SteveUm, but do you think the listeners have all turned this off because we've gone this far into the MCU?
KitToo late.
SteveNirvana the band, the show of the movie in Infinity Vision.
KitWe're jingling keys in front of you right now. Anyway, back to Sam Raimi.
SteveUm Are we jingling keys? Because we're just saying it's all bad. Sam Raimi, do you know one of my favorite filmmakers?
KitI was so angry when he came back to do the Doctor Strange movie.
SteveUgh.
KitI was furious because I was like, I'm done with these fucking Marvel movies. And then they're like, Sam Raimi's doing a Marvel movie, and I'm like, well, my ass is gonna be their opening weekend because I'll pay for anything he makes.
SteveI saw Oz the Great and Powerful in theaters.
KitI did too. It was fine. It's bad. It was fine.
SteveWell, you love James Franco, so.
KitYeah, canonically. I I do not.
MichelleI don't think I knew that was a Sam Raimi movie. Nobody does. It doesn't seem like him. It's not. It's a weird choice.
SteveThat and for love of the game, everybody forgets are Sam Raimi films.
MichelleI don't even know what that one is.
SteveThe Kevin Costner baseball romantic drama.
KitOh. Hmm. Never seen it, but I am vaguely familiar. Yeah, if you squint and kind of tilt your head, at a certain part you do see a dead eye in the background. It's in the stands during one of the games.
SteveBruce Campbell plays the ball.
KitThat's nice.
SteveAnyway, Nirvana to the band show.
KitYeah, so Matt is dead. Matt is on the ground, dead.
MichelleThe the little the little memory montage that plays while Jay is going back down and pretending to be a hostage is so cute to me. It's just like a bunch of clips of them hugging and having fun together. And Jay's so haunted by what he seems to have done.
SteveThis is the first time I've ever bought in on Jay is in love with Matt. Huh? You know, my read on this has always been it is a one-sided romantic love.
KitWow, that's crazy. Because the first three episodes of the season are like To each their own.
MichelleI think I think Matt loves Jay more, but but I I think it's I think there are romantic elements in both directions. Fair. Matt is so so joyous and carefree, he's all the things that Jay is scared to be. It's true. They fit together. That's really sweet.
SteveJust like how Matt saved all those people in the bank. He did not.
MichelleWell he did not.
SteveHe did.
MichelleHe did also uh maybe increase the risk of any of them getting shot. Perfect boy. Okay. No notes.
KitUm so the cops storm the bank. The hostages are being let out. Jay's still looking super haunted. He's walking away.
SteveAnd then the the best part is that it's just like a moving blanket. It's not even like a say like an emergency blanket that walks up behind him.
MichelleI I do love that in the reveal of like how how they got away with it, the like he's holding up the body, the body of the robber is what actually gets shot and falls off the roof, and then Jay goes downstairs and hides. But there's no like how how did Matt get down from the roof unknown? And where did he get himself in a blanky rocket shoes?
SteveHe's had rocket shoes all along. Remember when he said that there was like a uh a tripping hazard on the roof? Maybe it was the blanket.
KitDidn't he have the blanket up there? Did he?
SteveWe never saw, we don't know. I don't know.
MichelleI feel like this when he walks out, this is the first reveal of the blanket.
SteveYeah.
MichelleLost episode, lost media, the blanket. Aw. It's a peanuts tribute. Can I will that into existence?
SteveSeason three. Hey, yes, please. We reveal that uh Matt's alive. And also the cops stopped Jared trying to walk through to film them, which I I like that little bit.
MichelleAnd uh And his name was John Cena. John Cena. Um, and then that starts playing, and that's when I learned that John Cena had any part of his career where he was creating rap music. And I'm not sure how I feel about it. Steve is holding two hands together with pinkies up. Um, and what is that supposed to be like a bull?
SteveThat's I guess that's a thing he used to do. Because you could like buy inflatable ones at wrestling events. Weird. I had a wrestling phase. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. It lasted like 20 years. That makes sense. Are you still in it? No. Are you sure? Yeah. If you asked me about like WWE from like 1987 to like 2001, I got you.
MichelleWho is your favorite uh guy? Uh McFoley.
SteveInteresting. I still love him.
MichelleMm-hmm.
SteveHe's uh a rain counselor and uh charity Santa Claus. Oh that's nice.
MichelleHe's he's the guy who wears two flannel shirts at the same time.
KitBut was he a good wrestler?
SteveOh, famously so. He played three different characters at the same time. How does that work? One would leave and then the other one would come in. That rocks. It rocks. Kit, you would love mankind. And then he wrestled in a famous Hell in the Cell match where he got so many injuries that they would sell a t-shirt with a list of injuries on the back. That's crazy.
MichelleYeah, McFarland. Sounds like a human monster truck. He kind of is. Like a man version of Gravedigger. Yeah.
SteveBasically, and but like Jollier, I met a I w literally walked into him once at Hershey Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania. And he was like, You okay, son? And like picked me up, and I was like, Oh.
KitThis is real?
SteveYes.
KitThis is not a dream.
SteveNo, it's really happened.
MichelleWas he there for like an appearance or was he just enjoying Hershey Park?
SteveHe was there for like an appearance, and he was like taking his kids on the rides, and I was like running up the ramp because I was excited, and I slammed right into him, and he was like, okay, son, and then like picked me up. And I was like, Thank you, famous wrestler McFoley. Wow, that's incredible. Good guy. We love him. So, anyway, that's my favorite wrestler. Also, it was Hulk Hogan until you know the troubles.
KitIn Ireland.
SteveHey, brother, I stopped the troubles in Ireland. I fix those border issues, brother.
MichelleI like Undertaker.
SteveHe's pretty great too.
MichelleIn his big coat.
SteveI did love Undertaker as a kid too.
MichelleMm-hmm.
SteveAnd and his manager, Paul Bearer, who's basically a Nirvana the band character.
MichelleWhoa. Undertaker was who I always played in the Super Nintendo Royal Rumble game that I got from my cousin.
SteveIt's because you're a really spooky lady.
KitI try.
SteveWhen I think Michelle, I think spook tacular.
KitIt's true. I don't know about that. You're part of the track pack now.
SteveIt's true. Who's the spookiest of the three of us?
KitOh, it's Kit. Huh?
SteveI Kit and I are kind of neck and neck. Yeah. I just I love this. I love this episode. I love that Matt's not dead. I wish Jay would return those tapes because we need to support our local libraries.
KitMm-hmm.
SteveAnd other people are looking for VHSs.
KitWell, I mean, it's difficult to pay back the $85 when the bank is now an active crime scene. Um I don't think Jay realizes there are other banks that he could go to, probably. No, just this one. Yeah. That's where his account is.
SteveBut what about Matt Unlimited Money Johnson?
MichelleSo true. My favorite little lore tidbit. You just ask for the money.
SteveHe puts in the Konami code every morning into his life and then unlimited money's.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
MichelleHe's type in rosebud up in the up in the top corner. Um, I think something else I love that this episode has the framing of like at the very beginning, it's like this is a real thing that happened, and then the end of like what happened to all the characters, and then it includes Jay's library finds are still racking up.
SteveAnd that that's a straight dog day afternoon reference, those. Which is delightful. But yeah, Jay never returning his library tapes. Not cool, man.
KitI mean, in the grand scheme of things, I mean, I think that's a little more acceptable than what happened in the bank with Matt. No, Jay has committed egregious crimes. You're so right. You're so right. I'm sorry. Jay McGarrell should be in prison, actually.
SteveI didn't say you shouldn't be. I actually believe that we should abolish library fees, and I'm really glad that New York City did that. But he should return them.
KitMaybe Jay is on like a different wavelength right now and is also trying to abolish the library fees in Toronto.
MichelleHe's he's staging a protest by not returning his tapes until they get rid of overdue fees.
SteveThat's gonna be a plan at the Rivoli. We're gonna do a protest to shut them down. Oh, okay, season three pitch. They get one of those like striky the rats, put it in front of the Rivoli and say, let us play, or we're gonna like create a picket line in front of the Rivoli. Genius. Nice. We'll suggest it when they come on the show.
KitI love Scabby the Rat. I didn't realize that was a real thing until I moved to New York. I thought it was a 30 rock bit. And then I remember going to work one day and the giant inflatable rat was like in front of like a Barnes and Noble or something, and I was like, 30 rock in real life? No, you stupid bitch. It's He's a king.
MichelleI love that they didn't change it for 30 Rock, that they just took Scabby wholesale.
SteveI love that episode of Difficult People where they wheel around a Scabby the rat on a cart and put it in front of businesses so they could skip the line.
MichelleI've never seen that, but that sounds delightful.
KitDifficult people rock, so people should watch it.
SteveIt's true. We also get to see the CCTV footage of how Matt broke up the thing at the end where he clearly just tripped and they all tried to shoot him and hit each other. Not very good burglars.
KitNo.
SteveNot really burgling, I guess robbers. But gang, that's season one. We did it.
KitWe did it.
SteveHow does it feel? It feels weird.
KitFeels good. Michelle, how does it feel for you? This is your first watch through.
MichelleUm, it feels great. I think we've talked about this before, but it is a very interesting experience to be watching a show like one episode at a time for the most part, and like watching those episodes three times. I feel like that transports me back to like how I watch TV in an age where the internet was very different and my access to it was very different. And I would just like record an episode of Alias and watch it a bunch until the next episode of Alias came out. Um and it's nice. I don't know. It's it's fun, it's great. I love this show. Even even the episodes that I've liked the least have been a ton of fun. Like I there have been none so far that I like actively disliked. They've just all been varying degrees of great and funny and charming. And I'm so excited to go into season two. And I like, I think, I don't know if they knew they were getting a season two when they finished this, but I think if they hadn't, this is a very like lovely way to have ended season one. Agreed. I like that it's not a cliffhanger. I like that it's like you thought he was dead, but he's not, and they're just off to do more plans together.
SteveI do wonder if there was like a moment where when they shot the end of that, they were like, should we just leave it that Matt's dead? Because it could very well have been, right? Like an alternate, like an alternate take.
MichelleThat's true. But then you wouldn't get to see that nice shot of him in his tank top. He does look very cute in a tank. How do you feel after re-watching this person?
SteveThat's what I was gonna ask you, kit. Because like for me, I've been engaging with the show in a way that I did in my head, but like with feedback from you guys and like talking through it. And like it's been it's really changed the way that I watch this show. How has that felt for you? Like going back in this way where we're like deep diving on all of them.
KitYeah, I mean, I think I've had a different relationship to this than you guys, in that I maybe watch it once, maybe twice, and then I'm ready to party in the podcast. Um and like I am looking for things that are maybe a little different or seeing if I'm like catching any hints that I had missed previously, and I am still catching that stuff, which is remarkable because I've seen this so many times at this point. But I mean, if anything, it's kind of continuing to make me have this like deep appreciation for this absolutely insane magic trick of a television show they pull off. Yeah.
SteveYeah. I somehow walk away loving it more than I did before. And I you guys know I've been a fan for so long. Like the best.
MichelleIt is fun. It's been fun to have this also, like, and knowing we're talking about it. I think there are references and stuff that if I was just watching this alone and not gonna talk about it this way, like maybe I still wouldn't have seen my dinner with Andre. I would have just been like, oh, that's another thing that's referring to that movie that's famous that I've never seen. Um, and I think there have been a couple other things where like I actually sought out a reference that I didn't know. And it's been fun to have that be an aspect of it too.
KitSomething I've been thinking about a lot with Nirvana, the band is that this is gonna be a bit of a weird one, so stick with me here. Um, this is gonna be someone's my chemical romance in that. Oh my god. Yeah. Where so for me, when I got into my chemical romance when I was like 13 years old, um, seeing the Helena video on MTV, as you do, which rewired my entire brain, um, I then went through this period of time where I was looking for every single reference point that they had ever mentioned and getting really into it. So my chemical romance to me is this like cipher that got me into all of this other music, movie, comic books, art. Like I didn't know who the misfits were until I listened to My Chemical Romance and read interviews and stuff. And so I kind of see that with Nirvana the band because it there's so many references to other television shows, movies, video games, like all of this stuff. And so when I watch this and like based on the fact that like the fan base is growing and getting bigger and younger, like I can see this being somebody's My Chemical Romance, where like I watched this and then I found out what my dinner with Andre was, and then I watched this interview with Matt Johnson. He mentioned this movie, and now I'm into this, you know. I think that's really cool.
MichelleYeah, it's great. I wonder what I feel like everyone has to have some version of that. And I don't know what mine is, and I'm afraid that the answer might be the like VH1 decade specials. Nice. We all watched not a thing that I was passionate about, but a thing that I did watch voraciously and the 70s and the 90s.
SteveWelcome to the show, House Sparks.
KitOh my god.
SteveI don't even know what mine of those was now that I think about that. Like, hmm, we gotta interrogate that.
KitThink about it. Report back. What's your My Chemical Romance?
SteveI think it may have just been that my grandfather handing me VHS tapes, honestly.
MichelleHell yeah. We love grandpa's.
SteveOr I hate to say this. Maybe clerks?
MichelleHey, why do you hate to say it? We're fans of Kevin Smith on this.
SteveThat's just true. Like, I think it may have been that opened like a door to independent film. Because I remember I drew a direct line from that to sexualize and videotape, and then I became a Soderbergh head.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SteveAlso, I watched a movie with sex in the title when I was like 13 and was like, hell yeah. Nice, very cool. Before we wrap for this season, two things. I know we want to do a rankings, but uh I wanted to give another thank you to our great guests from this season and from this run so far, you know, like Carson coming on. I know we've thanked them before, but like having Connor Ratliff come on the show, having Barry Hurts come on the show. Like they were all so gracious with their time and added so much to our conversation. So I just want to like thank our guests so far and say, like, I'm really looking forward to some of the rat as hell guests we have booked for season two already.
MichelleYeah, thanks, thanks, people with like busy lives and interesting things going on for coming on our ding dong podcast. That's really nice of you.
KitYeah, and also thank you guys for listening, to be up with you. Like, I think we've mentioned this before, but when we started recording this, like back in what March, April, like we truly didn't think anyone was going to listen to this. And we were shocked when it came out, and people were not only listening to it, but emailing us and messaging us on Discord and you know, asking questions and providing thoughtful feedback. And you guys are amazing and it's really humbling. Yeah.
SteveYeah. And know that like we are not joking when we say like we read every email you send us, like we are genuinely appreciative of everything y'all send our way. So, like, yeah, like thank you. We really do appreciate you and the support you gave, like three Dorcases.
MichellePlease never stop telling us the weather in Canada. Please always love hearing about it, it changes all the time. I always want to know. You can call, you can email. Just tell me what temperature it is in like Sudbury or anywhere.
SteveAnd some of you have, but more of you, get in your odds and ends of Vice Land and other stuff. You know, like the Mega 64 specials, stuff like that. Because we're gonna be recording those soon enough. And if you know Verna Herzog, get him on the show. We told you that's the one person you're allowed to bother.
KitPlease. Shall we? Let's do it. Shall we letterbox top was it top four? I'm not on letterboxed. What it what is this? Four favorites.
MichelleFour favorites. Uh so if if anyone's not familiar with letterbox, the social media platform that Kit wants to burn to the ground. Yes. Um, it's it's for track and movies. And one of the things that you can do is um on your little profile, put your four favorite films um right under your name. They always they ask people this on red carpets, and we thought it would be a fun way to go through our favorites from the season.
SteveMichelle, what are your favorites on four of the favorites on Letterboxd?
MichelleUm, one of the things that I love about four favorites on Letterboxd is that I am not forced to put them in a ranking order. So know that these are not in any particular order. Um, but my four are the banner, the blind side, the buffet, and the bank.
SteveAlso, what were your top four on Letterboxd?
KitOh, my actual letterbox.
SteveOh, sorry, I can I can read it. I'm on your account now.
KitWhoa, whoa. Invasion of privacy.
SteveSleepless in Seattle, Paddington 2, High Fidelity and Newsies.
MichelleYeah. I think that's I think that's due for an update. I think maybe high fidelity should get knocked off of there as much as I love it. You gave Spider-Man Brand New Day and Tony the same rating anyway. For different reasons. Also, my letterbox ratings are vibes alone on how I feel within one hour of coming out of a movie. Should be abolished.
SteveFour stars kit, she gave Spider-Man Brand New Day. That's not my best time. You only gave Ella McKay two stars? What is going on here?
MichelleWell, that movie was uh bad.
KitAll right, Steve, what's your top four on Letterboxd?
MichelleCan you guess any of them? Did you find a way to do Rhapsody Street Kids four times? Yeah.
SteveJaws, taking a Pelum123, the original, Moonstruck, and all that jazz.
MichelleVery nice. That makes sense.
SteveReal Steve list of films. But in terms of uh Nirvana the Band, the show season one, in no particular order, the bank, the buffet, the big time, and the bean.
KitHmm.
SteveNice. I bet you can't you hate letterbox, but Nirvana the band.
KitFor Nirvana the Band, um, I would do the big time. That's my all-time fave uh for season one. Uh, and then the first three episodes the banner, the booking, the bean. Hmm.
SteveI love that we're all over the place with these. So we are gonna be back in a month. Friends of the podcast. Family of the podcast, if you will.
KitEnemies of the podcast.
SteveAny of you of the podcast. Do you think our podcast has any enemies? No, we definitely have some enemies. They haven't reached out to us, which I'm appreciative of, but there's somebody who doesn't like our our our cut of our jib. It's the internet. We'll be back in a month with the burger. I'm so excited. Anything else, friends, that you want to say as we wrap up season one?
KitWe need to thank lovely announcer Andy King do for that lovely intro to this episode.
MichelleAnnouncer Andy, you're my favorite guy. Sorry to all other guys.
SteveHe is the ultimate friend of the pod. It's true. Email's great. If I hadn't answered that email, we wouldn't have been here.
MichelleYeah. Thanks for thinking that our email address was that and Jay's email address. That was very nice of you. And I love I love where the where that mistaken mail has gotten us.
KitAndy, you are a delight every time I post something on our dumb Instagram. You are one of the first people to respond to it. You are so charming.
SteveWe love you, Andy. Yeah.
MichelleListen to Andy's radio show, The Flip Side.
SteveThe Phillips.
MichelleThe Phillips Side, sorry.
SteveP-H-I-L-P.
KitIn beautiful Saskatchewan.
SteveAnd he plays some good music. I'm just gonna say he posts on Instagram all of his episodes.
KitMm-hmm.
SteveSo, friends, I think you're great.
KitI think you're great. You're okay.
SteveHonestly, accurate.
KitAlright. Well, if that is everything, I guess we'll be signing off Vice Land Season 1. Well, we will see you guys in a month. And until then, nothing like a good feeling.
SteveNothing like a good feeling.
MichelleNothing like a good feeling. She did it.
SPEAKER_01And his name is John Cena.
MichelleAnd then we get royalty-free knockoff of John Cena music. Or we could get a seasoned desist from John Cena. Wouldn't that be a lovely way? Add it to the board. Yeah. We'll pick back up with season two with is John Cena suing us? To be continued.
SteveThank you for listening to Nirvana the band The Show the Podcast. We'd love to hear from you. You can email us or send a voice memo to NirvanaThePod at gmail.com.
